eSewa was established in 2009 and is licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank as a Payment Service Provider. eSewa is Nepal’s first and leading online payment gateway providing comprehensive payment solutions.
With eSewa digital wallet, customers can pay, send and receive money simply using the mobile app or a web browser.
eSewa has more than 5 million downloads on Playstore whereas Khalti has more than 1 million downloads.
Khalti was launched in 2017. Though Khalti was launched 8 years after eSewa, because of its genius marketing it has reached more than 1 million downloads in such a short period of time.
Although eSewa is the pioneer of personal mobile wallet in Nepal, in my view, Khalti has done a better job than eSewa.
Here is How?
In Khalti there are more features than eSewa.
You can register in Modeling Contests and also book a QFX movie ticket through Khalti.
You can also vote in the popular shows like The Voice of Nepal, Miss Nepal, Mr. Nepal and many other reality TV shows.
eSewa would have easily dominated the digital wallet market totally if they had initially implemented all these features.
Again, competition is good and it is what makes products better.
With Khalti becoming a direct competitior of eSewa, it has definitely made eSewa become an even better service provider one way or another.
We are consumers and it will be more convenient for us to use only one mobile wallet. I would personally choose the one that has more features.
Overall I like Khalti’s User Interface. The app’s theme color is more vibrant and tempting than eSewa.
However, in terms of trust, I trust eSewa.
Transaction Charges
For a transaction of Rs. 100-1000 eSewa and Khalti both doesn’t charge you any amount.
For a transaction amount greater than Rs. 1000 upto 50 thousand, eSewa Charges you Rs. 5 whereas Khalti charges you Rs. 10.
For a transaction amount greater than Rs. 50 thousand upto 1 lakh eSewa Charges you Rs. 20 while Khalti Charges you Rs. 15.
